There's other free networking solutions, but if you want similar functionality you're going to have to set up your own server(s) to connect your players. Photon though charges money for their service if you want a license that goes above 20 current connected users (if you're just doing this to learn, by all means try Photon with the free 20 users license and don't worry about cost). For example, Photon can handle your lobby and match making, and also connect players together even when the players are behind a firewall, without you needing to set up your own server to handle all of that. So I'd suggest first doing research more on the available networking API's for Unity, how those apply to how you want your game to work, and what 3rd party services you don't want to implement yourself.
